The Book
We’re wrapping up MILF Mayhem month with Mourning Wood, a small‑town Louisiana romcom that blends funeral‑home chaos, single‑mom tenderness, and a second‑chance spark that refuses to stay buried. Whitney is doing her best to raise her six‑year‑old daughter while managing quirky service requests, chapel mishaps, and the delicate art of making the dearly departed look their best.
Then he walks back into her life — the former hookup who’s been hired to renovate the funeral home chapel. He’s steady, thoughtful, and far too good with both tools and kids. Somewhere between paint swatches and small‑town gossip, he starts falling for Whitney and her daughter, one ridiculous moment at a time.
It’s funny, tender, and beautifully grounded in the reality that dating as a single mom means falling in love isn’t just about two people — it’s about building something real for the whole family.
Ratings
Overall Rating: 2.5 Stars ⭐⭐✨
This one landed squarely in the “perfectly fine” category for me. I really loved the way the story handled single motherhood — especially how Wyatt’s relationship with Prissy was given just as much weight as his connection with Whitney.
But the colloquial dialogue never quite clicked for me, and the town’s conservative, borderline misogynistic undertones pulled me out of the story more than once. It wasn’t bad by any means — just an average read with a few bright spots that stood out.
Spice Level: 2.5 Flames 🔥🔥🍷
This book sits comfortably in the “it’s fine” zone when it comes to heat. The scenes are on‑page and use some explicit language, but the actual intimacy stays pretty tame and sometimes a bit clunky. Nothing too bold, nothing too blush‑inducing — just a very average spice level.
Quote of the Week
Wyatt: Let me love you, Whitney. Without restraint – the way you deserve. The way you both deserve.
