Studies in Secrecy
Welcome to Mortimer University — where every masterpiece hides a secret, and every secret has a body count.
Book of the Week:
Enigma by RuNyx
The Book
Salem arrives at Mortimer University searching for answers about her sister's murder and quickly discovers that nothing about the school is as prestigious as it appears. Beneath the polished reputation lies a world of hidden agendas, secret societies, and people who seem determined to keep the truth buried.
Then there's Caz: an art student with secrets of his own, a talent for getting under Salem's skin, and an unfortunate habit of appearing whenever she's about to uncover something important. As the mystery deepens, Salem finds herself caught between the answers she's searching for and the boy she probably shouldn't trust.
Enigma is Dark Academia at its most addictive: murder mysteries, secret societies, academic obsession, and rivals-to-lovers tension wrapped in an atmosphere thick with secrets.
Vibe Check: Murder. Secrets. Magnetic attraction.
Ratings
Overall Rating: 3.75 Stars ⭐⭐⭐✨✨
Enigma hooked me with its mystery almost immediately. Secret societies? Murder investigations? Academic intrigue? Say less. I was all in. Add in brilliant, awkward Salem and a campus full of people who clearly need supervision, and I was more than happy to follow the breadcrumbs.
Where the book lost a few points for me was the writing style. It felt repetitive and leaned heavily on introspection, with enough inner dialogue to occasionally stall the momentum. It just didn't land as strongly as I wanted it to.
Enigma makes the Dean's List, thanks to its addictive mystery, compelling characters, and enough secrets to keep me turning pages far later than was academically advisable.
Spice Level: 3.5 Flames 🔥🔥🔥🍷
Unlike some books that thrive on anticipation alone, Enigma eventually delivers on all that tension. Salem and Caz spend plenty of time circling each other, trading suspicion, secrets, and lingering looks before they finally give in. But, when the payoff arrives? It absolutely delivers. Caz brings a demanding energy, the chemistry never lets up, and let's just say the pair aren't exactly committed to keeping things indoors. The tension is delicious, but the payoff is what earns this extra half flame.
Quote of the Week
Caz: I was a man on the path to damnation, and I saw salvation instead. Because being near you makes me feel something beyond rage. Because the chaos inside me quietens when I’m near you. You’ve become my muse, little asp.
